Gastown Pedestrian Pilot Updates

Gastown Construction Impacts - UPDATED June 2024

The City of Vancouver has completed construction on Maple Tree Square in advance of the Water Street pedestrian zone implementation.

The Hastings Crossing BIA and Gastown Business Improvement Society are committed to ensuring their respective members are aware of the construction and have the necessary information to navigate their daily operations and business during this period.

On this page, businesses will find the most up-to-date information on the upcoming traffic changes and infrastructure projects taking place.

Construction and Traffic Details:

After completion of the Maple Tree Square construction and through the duration of the Water Street pilot, traffic patterns will largely remain unchanged, with minor updates as shown below.

Traffic Changes (within HxBIA):

  • Main Street and Powell Street detours
    • Westbound through traffic will not be allowed to continue past Main Street from Powell Street and all traffic will be required to turn right or left at Main Street.
  • Powell Street restrictions
    • Powell Street will be limited to local deliveries between Columbia Street and Harbour Light Alley.
    • All traffic will need to turn right or left at Main Street.
  • Alexander Street directional changes
    • Alexander Street will be converted to a 2-way street, east of Maple Tree Square.
  • Columbia Street modifications
    • Columbia Street will be converted to a 2-way street between Powell Street and Hastings Street to support access and circulation.
    • The City will monitor Columbia Street throughout the duration of construction and the Water Street pedestrian pilot to assess whether it remains a 2-way street for a longer period of time.
  • Cambie Street
    • Cambie will be converted to a one-way street between Water Street and Cordova Street to support access and circulation.

 Local Vehicle Access:

Local vehicle access for residents and businesses will be maintained at all times. This includes access for deliveries, visitors, and customers, ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations.

Parking:

  • While some street parking will be impacted on the eastern side of Gastown, access to all parkades, including EasyPark Lots #31, #126, #8, #4, and Impark Lot #143 will remain fully accessible.
  • Select parking lots in Gastown will offer three hours of free parking to all visitors (limited to one per person, per week). More information on HxBIA’s free parking program can be found here.
  • Additional signage has been installed to help direct people to these lots.

 Transit Routes:

  • Westbound #50 buses will be detoured off Water Street and onto Hastings Street.
  • A new temporary bus stop is located at Waterfront Station @ Bay 2 (Stop #50040).
  • Eastbound #50 buses will remain on Cordova St and Cambie St and continue to stop on Cordova at Homer St (Stop #50036).
  • All other bus routes in the area will continue to operate on their regular routes.

 Street Maps:

To ensure clarity and ease of navigation during the pilot, the City of Vancouver has provided maps outlining traffic flow, parking options, and accessible routes. The map is shown below and available here.
